The California camping landscape is more varied than any place this side of Costa Rica, which makes this a wonderful place to camp.  You can freeze your buns off at a campground 12,000 feet up in the High Sierra, sizzle in the lava rubble of Death Valley, bask in Mediterranean sunshine on a camping beach near Santa Barbara, or pitch your tent among the ferns and banana slugs of a misty North Coast rain forest.  All within a couple of days—if you don't mind a bit of a drive.
